The most familiar images can be the easiest to stop seeing. Roy Lichtenstein’s dots, black outlines and heightened comic-book emotions have become such fluent cultural shorthand that recognition can arrive before attention. At the Whitney, Roy Lichtenstein: Like New asks us to look past that instant familiarity.

On view on Floor 5 from October 11, 2026 through May 10, 2027, the exhibition is the first New York retrospective of Lichtenstein’s work since 1993. It spans six decades of painting, drawing, sculpture, film and prints, bringing iconic paintings together with lesser-known works and four re-created murals.

The image is not the original

Lichtenstein’s breakthrough in the early 1960s began with imagery borrowed from comic books and newspapers. But borrowing was only the beginning. He reconfigured and refined those compositions before enlarging them and transferring them to canvas. What appears immediate is an exercise in selection: the line retained, the emotion sharpened, the frame made decisive.

That distinction matters. These paintings do not merely celebrate the look of mass culture; they make its visual machinery impossible to ignore. A black contour becomes an instruction. A field of dots becomes a surface we can no longer take for granted.

A mechanical look, a human hand

The Whitney describes work that looks cool, crisp and mechanical while remaining decidedly handmade. That tension is the exhibition’s most compelling invitation: to slow down in front of pictures whose language seems engineered for speed. The polish does not erase the labour. It disguises it.

Seen across a career rather than reduced to a signature style, Lichtenstein becomes more than the painter of an instantly recognisable Pop vocabulary. The retrospective traces an enduring investigation into perception—how an image works, how it circulates and how repetition changes what we think we know.

Why “Like New” feels like now

The title comes from a 1962 work, but its suggestion feels unusually current. We encounter images after they have been copied, filtered, cropped and reposted; the apparent original is often simply the version that reached us first. Lichtenstein’s art makes that instability visible without pretending it began with a screen.

For COUTEUR, the reason to see this exhibition is not nostalgia for Pop’s brightest colours. It is the opportunity to become a less passive viewer. Familiarity is not the same as understanding. A picture can announce itself instantly and still reward a much longer look.
