“DREAM WRANGLERS” ALEX GARANT

COUTEUR is thrilled to spotlight the upcoming solo exhibition Dream Wranglers by internationally renowned Canadian artist Alex Garant, opening April 12 through May 3, 2025, at Harman Projects in New York City.

Known for her hypnotic double-exposure-style portraits and symbolic visual language, Garant now invites us into a new realm—one deeply personal, introspective, and emotionally resonant. Dream Wranglers is not just a body of work; it’s a vivid, surreal journey through memory, identity, and the kaleidoscopic landscapes of the subconscious.

“For this series,” Garant shares, “I completely shifted my composition goals. I infused so much of my own psyche into every piece—this was a renewal of my storytelling method.”

Rather than letting her signature characters exist in ambiguous spaces, Dream Wranglers reintroduces context, narrative, and fragments of childhood wonder. Drawing from her own memories and dreams, the work fuses aesthetic nostalgia with introspective honesty: dreamscapes conjured from moving car windows, clothing from her youth, tactile fascinations with patterns and textures, and the blurred boundary between girlhood and grown identity.

Each painting acts as a portal—an attempt to “wrangle” those fleeting moments of joy, innocence, and eccentricity that often get buried beneath the weight of adult life. It’s about chasing the subconscious, reclaiming fragments of a freer, more playful self, and carrying them back into our waking lives.

“There’s a recognition of all the pieces of ourselves we’ve lost while trying to find a better version,” Garant explains. “This series is a serious introspection process—shedding the heaviness of the world to let the mind be free.”

Expect an evocative mix of visual storytelling, rich textures, and symbolic elements that reflect both personal memory and universal themes. This show is Garant at her most vulnerable and imaginative, inviting viewers to engage not just with the art—but with their own internal landscapes.
