“NIGHT VISION” CHRIS LEIB
November 26-December 17
Night Vision is an exhibition of new paintings by Chris Leib. These paintings are a continuation of his series of royal astronauts, begun in 2012.
Night Vision, at its core, delves into the realms of authority and surveillance, weaving together elements of heroism and state-sanctioned imagery. This artistic fusion redefines the heroic against a backdrop of governmental intrusion, as anachronistic royal figures surveil their domain in a panopticon-like manner.
In these compositions, the astronaut, symbolizing humanity's pinnacle achievements, takes center stage. However, the astronaut's faceless helmet, adorned with dark reflective visors reminiscent of camera lenses or pupils, adds an intriguing layer. The visual intake of the astronaut remains shrouded in mystery, fostering a stark contrast between blindness and the camera-like perception, hinting at twilight or nocturnal pursuits, akin to predatory "hunting" for potential adversaries. The association of night vision with predatory behavior underscores the advantageous position of those wielding superior knowledge and mobility, positioning them as predators over prey.
State (royal) portraiture, historically a tool for promoting statesmanship and projecting power through propaganda, is revisited in Night Vision. The subjects in these portraits, adorned with jewels and an otherworldly aura, exude an untouchable air, positioned above the ordinary citizenry. Leib incorporates jewels and patterns, drawing parallels with traditional royal portraits where such elements held symbolic significance. Mirroring the use of codifications and ciphers in historical artworks, Leib employs jewels and patterns as puzzles, adding an additional layer to the narrative of the paintings.
Furthermore, Night Vision draws inspiration from various mythological and folkloric figures associated with power and civilization, creating a rich tapestry that transcends both classical and contemporary themes. By blending these elements, Leib endeavors to construct a sense of timelessness that speaks to the enduring nature and dynamics of power.
