OBEY / SHEPARD FAIREY “FACING THE GIANT”
JUNE 22-JULY 20
For his second solo exhibition at Itinerrance Gallery, artist Shepard Fairey, also known as OBEY, has chosen to organize a retrospective spanning his 30-year career.
This exhibition represents a conversation between the punk beginnings of a 19-year-old Shepard Fairey and his current life as a 49-year-old artist. The objective of this exhibition is to illuminate the consistency and evolution of his work and conceptual expression over the past 30 years. The title, "Facing the Giant," alludes to the "André the Giant" stickers spread worldwide and more broadly to the vast challenges he grapples with in his work.
The artworks displayed in the "Facing the Giant: 3 Decades of Dissent" exhibition encapsulate recurring themes throughout the artist's career, such as the abuse of power, environmental degradation, racism, the arms industry, propaganda, and more. Shepard Fairey continues to create impactful works, consistently drawing from various inspirations.
This retrospective proves that it is possible to merge Art with social discussion in a playful, stirring, humorous, graphically eloquent, and sometimes simply beautiful way.
