ORIT FUCHS INTERVIEW

“Through my work, I aim to challenge traditional notions of gender, to question societal norms, and to encourage viewers to think critically about the roles we play and the personas we adopt.”
— ORIT FUCHS

Your work beautifully blends elements of pop culture with contemporary gender roles. How do you choose the subjects and themes you explore, and what messages do you hope to convey through these intersections?

My choice of subjects and themes is deeply influenced by the world around me, particularly the complexities of modern society and the evolving roles of gender. I find pop culture to be a powerful lens through which to examine these themes, as it reflects the shifting dynamics of identity, power, and representation. Through my work, I aim to challenge traditional notions of gender, to question societal norms, and to encourage viewers to think critically about the roles we play and the personas we adopt. I hope to convey a message of empowerment, self-discovery, and the importance of authenticity in an increasingly performative world.

The female form is central to your art. How has your understanding and portrayal of femininity evolved over the years, and how do you see it continuing to evolve in future projects?

The female form has always been a focal point of my work, but my understanding of femininity has evolved significantly over time. Initially, my portrayal was more influenced by external ideals and societal expectations. However, as I’ve grown both as an artist and as a person, I’ve come to embrace a more nuanced and inclusive view of femininity—one that celebrates diversity, strength, vulnerability, and complexity. In future projects, I see myself continuing to explore these themes, perhaps delving even deeper into the intersectionality of gender, identity, and culture. I believe that femininity, like art, is constantly evolving, and my work will continue to reflect that dynamic progression.

Your background in art direction for leading Israeli agencies has clearly influenced your current work. How do those experiences shape the way you approach your art today?

My experience in art direction has had a profound impact on my approach to creating art. Working in the fast-paced environment of leading Israeli agencies taught me the importance of clarity, composition, and the power of visual storytelling. These principles are deeply embedded in my artistic practice today. The discipline of balancing creativity with communication, of making sure that every element on the canvas serves a purpose, is something that has carried over from my time in the commercial world. Additionally, the exposure to various creative challenges and the need to constantly innovate have pushed me to continually explore new techniques and ideas in my work.

Your art has a universal appeal, resonating with audiences across diverse cultures. How do you balance the personal and cultural elements in your work to connect with such a broad audience?

Balancing personal and cultural elements in my work is both a challenge and a joy. I strive to create art that is deeply personal and rooted in my own experiences and emotions while also tapping into universal themes that resonate across cultures. This balance is achieved by focusing on fundamental human experiences—identity, love, loss, and the search for meaning—that transcend cultural boundaries. I believe that by being authentic and true to my own voice, I can connect with others on a deeper level, allowing the work to speak to a diverse audience.

Many of your pieces delve into the complexities of self-expression and human storytelling. How do you navigate the fine line between reality and fiction in your art?

Navigating the line between reality and fiction is an integral part of my creative process. I see art as a space where reality can be interpreted, reimagined, and even transcended. In my work, I often blend real-life experiences with fictional elements, creating a narrative that is both personal and universal. This allows me to explore deeper truths about the human condition, using fiction as a tool to reveal the complexities and contradictions of reality. By embracing this fluidity, I can tell stories that are not only reflective of my own experiences but also open to interpretation, inviting the viewer to find their own meaning within the work.

As someone who continuously pushes the boundaries of artistic expression, what drives you to explore new artistic horizons, and what are some challenges you’ve faced in this journey?

The drive to explore new artistic horizons comes from an insatiable curiosity and a desire to express the ever-changing landscape of my inner world. I am constantly inspired by the world around me, by new ideas, by the work of other artists, and by the need to push myself beyond my comfort zone. This exploration is both exhilarating and challenging. One of the biggest challenges is overcoming self-doubt and the fear of failure—knowing that not every experiment will be successful, but that each one is a step towards growth. Additionally, balancing the desire to innovate with the need to stay true to my artistic vision can be difficult, but it is a challenge that I embrace wholeheartedly.

“Art has been a profoundly therapeutic process for me. It allows me to channel complex emotions and thoughts into something tangible, providing a sense of clarity and release. Through the act of creation, I am able to process my experiences, confront difficult emotions, and find a sense of peace.”

Art has been a profoundly therapeutic process for me. It allows me to channel complex emotions and thoughts into something tangible, providing a sense of clarity and release. Through the act of creation, I am able to process my experiences, confront difficult emotions, and find a sense of peace. I believe that art has the power to do the same for others. It offers a safe space for self-expression, a way to explore and make sense of one’s inner world.
