“CALM AND CONTEMPLATION”
'Calm and Contemplation', a collective exhibition at StolenSpace Gallery showcasing an eclectic mix of artists. This global and local ensemble explores their unique artistic take on the age-old concept of 'still life' art, offering a refreshing perspective.
In today's world, finding peace and serenity amidst the onslaught of rapid technological progress and readily available information can be challenging. 'Calm and Contemplation' gives us the opportunity to halt, contemplate, and introspect on the things we choose to keep close. This display examines the transformation of still life from its historical origins and relevance in our contemporary lives, providing a visual slice of the present moment.
Historically, 'still life' refers to artwork portraying inanimate objects, both natural and artificial. Common motifs include flowers, fruit, vases, bones, and clocks, symbolizing 'Memento Mori' or the inexorable march of time leading to death. This genre has seen various reinterpretations and evolutions over time, reflecting societal and cultural nuances extending beyond the Western perspective. Still life articulates a deeply personal narrative, the objects we select to represent us and establish our identities continue to depict the essence of still life.
The 'Calm and Contemplation' showcase gathers StolenSpace artists who reinterpret still life from an innovative perspective. Their expressions span various artistic mediums such as painting, collage, weaving, and drawing. The artworks, inspired by their personal cultural backgrounds and experiences, celebrate life's joy, the essence of life, and the importance of taking time to pause in our current existence.
