“SEEKING UTOPIA” AKUT
AUGUST 12-SEPT.2, 2023
Returning from their summer hiatus, KIRK GALLERY is thrilled to share that the acclaimed AKUT will be joining them for a mural exhibition and individual showcase. AKUT, globally celebrated and notably one half of the iconic duo HERAKUT, has solidified his presence in the Urban Art realm over the past decade.
Born in 1977 in Schmalkalden, Germany, AKUT now resides and produces art in Berlin. His academic journey took him to the Bauhaus University in Weimar, where he pursued Visual Communication and Graphic Design. AKUT was a pioneer of graffiti in his hometown, tracing his beginnings to the early 1990s. However, instead of the conventional tagging and lettering, AKUT has always leaned towards creating photo-realistic pieces.
AKUT’s artistry brilliantly melds photorealistic elements with hints of graffiti, introducing a fresh perspective to street art within the recognized art sphere. With his grounding in Communication and Graphic Design, AKUT wears the hat of a photographer too. His photographic collections portray compelling social issues, ranging from the housing crisis in Hawaii, leading to increased homelessness, to the struggles of child laborers in Nepal.
About the show AKUT tells the following:
"Inhumanity seems to rise and political power shifts in a direction one would have never have expected. Our new reality houses fear from climate change and many other realities on every end approached politically in many opposite directions. We invented monumental buildings, airplanes and boats while seeking some kind of utopia, but fail in being human beings.
When the world outside gets too dark it’s time to focus on our basic needs. A little caress can have a healing effects and is our physical and mental connections to others. The simple basic instinct that satisfies the troubled mind.
SEEKING UTOPIA portraits the demanders and dreamers with their realistic imagination of a world in which human rights are truly and universally inherent to every human being, regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status."
